2.1.65: file table overflow

hmmm..

Don't quite know where to start on this, but I am a pretty heavy user on
my Linux system. I started evaluating the development series yesterday,
and whenever I try to do a couple things at once (i.e. compile a kernel
AND read e-mail), I get the error: "file table overflow".

Usually when this happens, several input files actually become corrupted
under /usr/src/linux, so I have to delete the distribution and start
again.

One time today, I was in X while compiling a kernel (something I usually
do often) and Netscape reported that I no longer had a home directory.
'gcc' reported a broken pipe, and I was unable to log into a console
terminal. Eventually, the whole system went south so I rebooted.

If there is anything I can do to provide more information, please let me
know! I would check the archives, but they aren't current (only up to
September) and I just joined the list, so I don't know if this has been
reported already.
