tulip + rlt8139 + 2.2.16: a bad mix

I decided to add a second nic to one of my machines, but unfortunately
the kernel decided it was a bad plan and complained loudly:

21041 transmit timed out, status fc670045, CSR12 000021c4, CSR13 ffffef09, CSR14 fffff7fd, resetting...

The configuration of the machine: stock 2.2.16 kernel on an i386 machine.
There is no IRQ conflict, the tulip card gets irq 10 and the rtl8139
gets irq 9. Both IRQs are correctly detected by the drivers. The tulip
is connected via BNC, the rtl8139 via a crossover UTP cable.

The rtl8139 card works just fine, the tulip refuses to work. Removing
the rtl8139 card from the machine makes the tulip nic work again..

As usual more information available if needed.
