oops while installing applications on a new laptop (2.3.99pre6)

haven't run a 2.3 on a laptop since the 2.3.40's but the pre's seem to a
bit brittle... I got this while installing staroffice.

the laptop is toshiba portege 7200 mobilstep pIII-600 intel 440zx, it's
using the vesa FBcon driver and the FB xserver as the trident e4 doesn't
seem to be supported by anything...

I'm also seeing dma modes fail on the hard-drive connected to an 82371AB
PIIX4 IDE controller, the disk is TOSHIBA MK1214GAP
