Hi

I've been seeing severe performance problems with the ne2k driver for ISA
cards under 2.2 and 2.3

under 2.0 everything is fine. I remember that I could sit and play quake
(software rendering) on my K6 200 with the NIC maximized all the time and
I didn't notice anything. But with 2.2 and 2.3 Quake is completely
unplayable. This was just an example.

Another example is that on this K6 200 X would almost stop updating the
screen when there was heavy load on the NIC with 2.2/2.3
But the only thing I noticed in 2.0 when people were downloading files
from my ftp was that the HDD LED flashed sometimes but that was all.

A friend of mine with a similar card (not identical) as mine upgraded to
2.2.14 and he threw that ne2k card out of the box as fast as he could.
The box was completely useless with that card in it

I've also tested it in another machine, a Celeron 366.
That machine is somewhat usable when under heavy networkload, but it slows
down quite a bit.

I've tested a tulip-clone in the Celeron 366 and even at 60Mbit that
doesn't slow down the machine as the ne2k card

The biggest slowdown (with the ne2k) is when transmitting, but it slows
down quite a bit when recieving to.

I've also tested a ne2k-pci card in the Celeron and that was better but it
still used a LOT of cpu. I didn't find this acceptable either.

Can the problem be found in 8390.c ?

If anyone has any clues, please let me know. I'll happily test suggestions
or patches (or a combination :)

/Martin

PS. The cards where connected to a 10/100 switch, and the duplex-setting
are correct.
