SMP Lockups III -The Search for Stability

I'm using a off-list email to try not to miss anything in the mail flood my
normal box gets

**

I'm concerned that it's going to get left by the wayside in 2.2...so here's
my own SMP problem book.

I'm still having massive problems with SMP support on 2.2.10-2.2.15 and all
PRE's in
between. Likely before then, but that's as far back as I can remember at
the moment.
Essentially, I've never had 2.2 OR 2.3 work in SMP mode w/o problems.
However,
the last 2.3 version I tried was in January of 2000.

The symptoms are one of the following, within 4 hours of system start
(usually within 45 minutes):
        Hard lock
                This is the most common
Kernel panic with unable to handle kernel paging request
This has gone away it seems, since i added another 128mb of
ram
Lock with IRQ errors on console
Unlogged, i can't recall the exact text at the moment
The statement is that IRQ's are being shut down because of
too many interupts.
This particular error stopped being funny a few months back
:)
        Network shutdown.
All services running, machine 100% responsive from console,
but no network,
not even ping. Interfaces show as up. Cycling them has no
effect.

I've tried:
noapic -- per AC suggestion, no change.
        Different motherboard (Same make/model however)
        Different memory
HD's have been replaced since this started, always UDMA33 drives,
either Maxtor (previous) or IBM boot and Maxtor data (current)
HD controller had been replaced as a test w/ a PCI UDMA66
controller, no change.
Kernel has Andre Hedrick's<sp?> IDE patches applied, always.
Without them it is far less stable, even in UP.

If I run with nosmp as a kernel option (sigh, it's my default lilo config
these days), the
system will _usually_ stay up as least as long as the next kernel pre-patch.
Always
at least a week in UP, however. When it fails in UP, it does so with the
same
symptoms as SMP.

The system is a webserver, running httpd, mysqld, and sendmail. It handles
about
3K emails per day, and roughly 7 million http requests per day. It handles
those
requests much better during the short times it has the full use of it's
processors. :)

If anyone has anything they'd like me to try to assist in debugging i'm up
for it.

ALSO, and on a separate note:

EXT2-fs warning (device ide0(3,1)): ext2_free_inode: bit already cleared for
inode 1634029

This particular error (bit already cleared) started occuring with
2.2.15pre-something (low, like 4 or so)

Appended is the output from: ver_linux, lspci, bootup log, hdparm, and
kernel config.
