Build error (fat.o(.text+0x261e): undefined reference to

I am attempting to build kernel 2.3.9. My system is a x686 and my
configuration meets the requirements set forth in
"Documentation/Changes".
Is there a patch? Please respond directly to me. I only get the
digests.
