What is wrong with the POSIX record lock over NFS? I am using it now.

# df /var/spool/mail
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
ocean:/var/spool/mail
85520 15979 65125 20% /var/spool/mail

But you need my knfsd package.
