I have been fooled by this technique (on a Sony PCG-505, which has a very
nice non-win modem). It has some voice-over-data driver that it uses
to let you talk to support (that way they can see and play with your system
if you let them). It has a driver of non-trivial size, but it's not needed
for normal modem operation.
