But that implies also loading all possible drivers during the install, etc.;
but during the install? That's a disaster waiting to happen, not to mention
a waste of memory (especially since you'd have to do it before swap space
has been established).

That one doesn't impress me much, because

(1) / is on a ramdisk, not the hard drive, during the install... and we've
already done the initrd thing so we can't use the initrd root hack again.

(2) it wouldn't apply to my installs anyway --- I have to deal with little
things such as AFS.
