Re: pre-2.1.126-2 sd.c does not build as module

The only obvious thing I see in the pre-2.1.126 patch is the
replacement of SCSI_DISK_MAJOR with SCSI_DISK_MAJOR0..n. It seems to
me that SCSI_DISK_MAJOR could have been left defined, for backwards
compatibility, but I don't think it's a big deal.

I wouldn't say this is "precisely" why. In my eyes, a major reason it
doesn't get very far is that there is presently no incentive to
maintain and/or document stable kernel interfaces, and given the lack
of stable interfaces, splitting the tree is much less appealing.
