It appears that my disk has some badblocks. I am attempting to run
'e2fsck -cf /dev/hda4' to clear it up. It says that it is detecting
them and fixing them but then I run the same command and it finds the
same ones again. Is this normal? I would think it would already now
the sector is bad and not try it.

You're using an old version of e2fsck. There is a newer version of
e2fsprogs which fixes this problem. You can find the sources for the
latest version of e2fsprogs (2.12) at the web site:

I run 2.0.36pre14 slackware 3.5

I'd also suggest upgrading to a more modern and sophisticated
distribution which supports packages; I use RedHat, but Debian is also
quite good. This is true particularly if you want to get the latest bug
fixes, security fixes, etc., and don't want to be bothered compiling
from sources yourself or reinstalling newer versions of Slackware to get
newer software. (Both RedHat and Debian support packages, which
allows you to upgrade individual packages without needing to reinstall
the system.)
