PPP not working in 2.1.125

I've got ppp-2.3.5 installed, and I've got ppp compiled as a
module.

I get:

1 root@red:~# /usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support
for PPP. This could be because
the PPP kernel module is not loaded, or because the kernel is
not configured for PPP. See the README.linux file in the
ppp-2.3.5 distribution.

My kernel is 2.1.125 pure, compiled with gcc 2.7.2.3.

Feel free to fire up your flamethrower, slap me in the head,
or whatever if I've missed something. ;o)
