Ethernet Timeouts, 3c509 & SMP 2.1.123

I've been seeing ethernet timeouts on my box since around 2.1.106 when
using an SMP kernel. Non-SMP the card behaves fine. It also only occurs on
heavy outbound network load (outbound from the box).

The hang locks up all network activity for around 0.5 to 1 second.

Syslog reports:

Oct 2 12:08:38 sweep kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status e0 status 2004 Tx FIFO room 1040.
Oct 2 12:10:43 sweep kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room 1500.
Oct 2 12:11:03 sweep kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status a0 status 2004 Tx FIFO room 1116.
Oct 2 12:43:07 sweep kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status a0 status 2004 Tx FIFO room 1436.
Oct 2 13:05:11 sweep kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 Tx FIFO room 1344.

The card is a 3c509, currently the machine is running 2.1.123. The box
itself is a dual PII.

Any pointers as to where I should be looking?

Cheers,

Rick
