i have fixed several RAID5 lockups, these fixes are not yet in the main
kernel, but you might want to check out the latest alpha patch:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/raid/alpha

the RAID5 driver puts quite heavy load onto the block layer, so bugs have
a better chance to pop up under RAID5. But otherwise it should work just
right.
