Have you looked at Brian Bartholomew's "WVfs" (formerly called pgfs).
He wrote an article in Linux Journal about it. Many of your concepts
are very similar.

And not free for anything else, right? You're going to have big
problems convincing a lot of people to use your tool if that's the
case.
