I hope that this additional information can help.
I got hard lockups with recent 2.1.xx (2.1.103?) kernel
on a SINGLE processor and ATAPI cdrom - using the ide-scsi
emulation. Kernels compiled with SMP support (but no SMP
hardware).

That happened when I tried to verify CD_R disks burned with
xcdroast (I have an ATAPI writer so I need to use ide-scsi
which also takes control over the ATAPI CD reader).

Hangs happned when I verified disks (mainly sequencial
read from the block device). Luckily not when burning disks.

I recompiled the kernel disabling SMP support and did not
see these hangs again. I believe the hangs are related
to (transient) read errors from the CD.
