Misdetected CDROM in 2.1.9x

I have an Acer JAS/CD910-E 10X CDROM-player which is wrongly (I hope)
detected as
a 4X CDROM by the later kernels.

I'm sorry but I can't say exactly when this started
but I would like to help out if someone can point me in
the right direction.

My system is a Redhat-5.0 with some updates: binutils-2.8.1.0.27,
egcs-1.0.2.

AMD K6-200 with bug.
