I applied the patch you provided in a subsequent msg. My problem was not
as severe as yours. My backlight would go off if I was not in an X-vt,
but then come back on after a few minutes. I upgraded XFree86 to 3.3.2,
but that had no effect. I just discovered that this problem does not
occur unless I have Netscape running! Normally I boot, login, switch to
another vt, login, switch back and start X with fvwm and start up
Netscape. After applying your patch, I took it step by step. I started
the two vt's and waited. Backlight went off, then it suspended. I
started X and switched back to the non-X vt. Same thing. Switched back
and started Netscape, then switched back. Backlight went off, but
instead of suspending, the backlight came back on with text showing,
then the screen blanked but left the backlight on.
So, It seems that Netscape is maybe the villian.
