I am have HP LJ4 with [almost] the same symthoms. The only difference is that
if HP LJ4 is turned on while linux boots up than all works just fine. If it's
turned off than I have above sympthoms. If HP LJ4 is turned on in such time
all goes just fine even if it's will be turned off after boot and then turned
on! I am could not use "binary search" since it's production comp for > 300
users and it's could not be rebooted without while I am physically there
and when I am not physically there I could not test printing, but at least
with 2.0.33 all works just fine and in 2.1.89+ I have above sympthoms...

I am have a lot of modules (all filesystems except ext2 and proc, floppy, etc:
since that server does not floppy drives it's not needed to keep floppy driver
in memory permanently), but parport things are all in kernel...

Exactly so. I am could get 1 (one) symbol printed sometimes!
