Can't set UltraDMA mode 2 on Quantum Fireball SE

I'm using hdparm 3.3, kernel 2.0.33.

I've tried this on both Slackware 3.1 heavily upgraded, as well
as the new RedHat 5.0.

Any pointers would be appreciated. Any FAQ's addressing this?
