I keep getting the following error when trying to change my CDROM
motor spindown timer. Any ideas what could be causing it?
Kernel bug? Shitty hardware? My guess is that it is the latter.

3 capslock:/stuff/hdparm-3.3# hdparm -S 0 /dev/hdd

/dev/hdd:
setting standby to 0 (off)
hdd: drive_cmd: status=0x51
hdd: drive_cmd: error=0x04
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD failed: Input/output error

Here is my drive's specs as given by hdparm

3 capslock:/stuff/hdparm-3.3# hdparm -i /dev/hdd

/dev/hdd:

Model=TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5302TA, FwRev=2095, SerialNo=55000347
Config={ SpinMotCtl Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=0(?), BuffSize=256kB, MaxMultSect=0
DblWordIO=no, maxPIO=2(fast), DMA=no
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:180}, PIO modes: mode3

What is SpinMotCtl?
