Which is the good 2.1.x kernel to try out..

Hello Folk;
I just want to try out some of 2.1.x kernels but I don't know what
is the good one to get on. I tried to compile 2.1.60 which is the lastest
release. But I have failed to compile. There were an error message said
something about "incompatible prototype" or something like this. Last 2
weeks I tried to compile 2.1.57 kernels I got the same error.
Anyone can tell me what is happening with my gcc or do I have to
upgrade my gcc or any of my compiler.
