Re: APM kernel problems on HP 4000C laptop

I have since given my HP Omnibook 4000 to my sister and replaced it with
an Omnibook 5500CT. It seems somewhat better behaved, but I still have
occasional problems. Usually, but not always, after I've invoked the
APM suspend function.

Once in a while I'll see the kernel message

free_one_pmd: bad directory entry 00400000

and at that point the kernel becomes completely unusable; any attempt
to execute a command results in an immediate segmentation fault. A
reboot is required to get things going again. This afternoon this happened
during the reboot fsck, which made things pretty dicey. Eventually I was
able to nurse it through the fsck and get things going again.
