This sounds pretty similar to the hangs I get with diald.
When you're running X, you can't see the oops, and of course it's locked badly
enough to prevent you switching back to the original vt.

If I can't get sysklogd-1.3-3 to build (does not deal with modutils-2.1.34), I
think I might hook up a serial console and see what can be gleaned...

Oh, this was 2.1.40, no SMP, diald with kerneld demand-loading most stuff.
About to try again with 2.1.42 etc.
