GDB and new kernels

I may be way off the mark here, but it looks like the current version
of GDB still uses a ptrace interface, atleast for the intel version of linux.
Is anyone working on a port that uses proc so we can better handle things like
threads?
I know that gdb supports proc under some OSes (irix?), who should I
talk to about getting involved with this under linux?
