Anyway... Found the table trashed prior to shutting down, so I patched
it in the usual manner then did the 'shutdown -r'. Everything came up
clean, and so far, there has been no further munging of the partition
table. I don't know quite what to make of this, but I'll keep an eye
on things and if the corruption shows up again, maybe I'll have a better
idea what's causing it. For now, the "evidence" suggests that the table
patching I was doing wasn't "taking" for some reason: rofs semantics
being applied incorrectly (prior patch attempts were made with the root
filesystem mounted readonly), cacheing, <insert-your-guess-here>.
Whatever...
If I've overlooked something obvious, I'm sure it will be pointed out
to me :-).
