memory management

I had the same problems with "couldn't get a free page" errors, but with smaller blocksizes the problem "disappears".
The problem I got is the following one:
I tried to send 20000 blocks of 16kB (wanted to get statistics about "real-throughput", means in summary a volume of appr. 312MB.
When I looked on my mem-info statistics there where shared-mem sizes about this 312MB during sending with write(..) - is this a bug somewhere or is there really a shared-mem size of 312MB? (32MB-system with 50MB swap)

Thanks for hints.
