writing errors w/1.3.68

While running 1.3.68, I was playing gnuchess-4.0.pl75,
and as it was writing its hashfile to disk, it exited
with a segmentation fault.

Now, i've got problems with other programs as well,
after fsck on my partitions:

when I invoke vi:

Error writing headers to "/tmp/elv_xxx.1"

when I invoke make:

cpp: /tmp/cca00070.i: No space left on device

when I ran lilo on an old, stable kernel image:

write /boot/map~: No space left on device

what alternatives do I have?
