I'm outnumbered. Many have no problem. I can load 1.3.20 and all is fine
(r.e. X312). Any kernel after that fails to load with an strace indicating
the the socket will not connect. The only variable is the kernel. I can't
figure it out. In any case thanks for the time and I will have to tough it
out.

Reference:
strace for 1.3.20 shows that the socket connect is as follows:
connect(4, {sun_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/tmp/.X11-unix/X0"}, 19) = 0

and with the later kernels:
connect(4, {sun_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/tmp/.X11-unix/X0"}, 19) = ? \
ERESTARTSYS (To be restarted)
connect(4, {sun_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/tmp/.X11-unix/X0"}, 19) = -1 \
ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused)
