AT/ESDI support broken in 1.3.42?

I know it's not exactly a hot topic, but has anyone out there tried using
1.3.42 (or other recent kernels) with ESDI disks? I just tried it at on a
coworker's machine, and though I was able to FIPS and fdisk the disk
(deleting and adding partitions successfully) I got massive read errors
when trying to do anything useful to the disk, even using "dd if=/dev/hdc2
count=100 of=/dev/null".

I have not had a chance to test this system under 1.2.x + ESDI, so it is
possible it is not a 1.3.x problem. However, Win95 was happy with the
disk, doing a diskopt beforehand and a scandisk afterwards.

Better to try a glass of a different type of wine on a different day.
