tar and lockup

Hello,
I just had a very weird experience. I was untarring linux-1.3.24
and my system froze. I could switch vc's, but could only type in two of
them -- the one the tar had been running in, and a telnet connection I had
running. Typing in the one with tar running had no effect of course, but
the telnet session was still working fine. I tried telnetting back into
the machine and everything locked up. The machine is currently running
linux 1.3.18 ELF. I don't know if this is a kernel bug or not. I'll look
in the logs for details.
