Is there a way to drop into some type of monitor that interfaces
directly to the hardware (i.e. like Sun's open boot prom...)

I want to minimally enter a hot key combination (on sun its L1-A)
to drop to this level, and option sync the disks and boot...

Is there a way to do this on Linux?

(I made a new samba last night...for some reason the daemons just started
wailing on the memory and cpu...)
