I had to install several Linux-Boxes with XFree86 3.1.1 running the Mach64-Server.
This may be no help, but take a look at your video card. I had the same effects with
a card built in Canada and really no problems with the same card, same release-date
but built in USA. I changed the video card (made in Canada) to another one made in
USA and everything was fine.
