I'm not using this kernel for everyday work, I only compiled
it this week to test it.

The kernel I use every day without ANY problem is:
Linux version 2.4.20-rc1-acpi_20021101-imq (horacio@corralito) \
    (gcc version 3.2.1 20021103 (Debian prerelease)) #1 Thu Nov 7 23:11:11 ART 2002
It was patched with acpi (version 20021101) + the imq patch.
