Ok, I've backed out Andre's ide driver patch and updated to 2.2.17pre5.
Still no-go on the CD-ROM:

Jun 20 22:15:25 pii kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jun 20 22:15:25 pii kernel: 16:00: rw=0, want=33, limit=0
Jun 20 22:15:25 pii kernel: dev 16:00 blksize=1024 blocknr=32 sector=64 size=1024 count=1
Jun 20 22:15:25 pii kernel: isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=16:00, iso_blknum=16, block=32

FWIW, I have a WPI CDS-32X drive. I noted some workarounds in the code
for it. Perhaps something has been re-broken in the recent patches?

The unit works flawlessly under 2.2.16.
