Compaq Redundant Power Supplies

Hi!

Stimulated by Linux support of both Oracle and Compaq we started an "Oracle
on Linux" pilot october 1999. The initial installation of both Linux and
Oracle en a Compaq Proliant went very smoothly, and ever since the machine
was rocksteady.
Last week however one of the power supplies broke. Dispite the fact that we
installed a redundant power the machine froze. Because we had to get it up
ASAP we weren't able to fully investigate the problem. These are the
symptoms however:
* We could still ping the machine
* When trying to telnet the machine we got a connection, but that was just
it. No login prompt showed up nor did it respond otherwise.
* There was no keyboard respons on the console at all
* The console showed "Completion of ffffffff ignored" which is printed by
the cpqarray driver.
* We had to turn the machine of and booted it
* During (BIOS) boot the BIOS indicated the failure of the broken Power
Supply
* During (BIOS) boot the cpaqrray showed some writes had to be flushed to
the disks. This was done automatically
* During Linux boot a fsck did some repairs automatically
* After Linux boot one of the databases faild to start because of data
corruption

Some more details about the configuration:
* Redhat 6.0 with the standard 2.2.5-15smp kernel
* 768 MB Memory
* Compaq Proliant 5500
* Compaq Smart 3200 Array controller
* 6 x 9 GB disks combined in pairs into 3 x 9B RAID1 disks
* Oracle 8.0.5.1.0

Could anyone answer the following questions:
* Is there a logical explanation for what happened?
* Can the kernel know if any of the powersupplies is malfunctioning?
* Are additional drivers needed?

If anyone can help me to get some answers I'd be very grateful.

Rolf
