Lockups with 2.3.99.7-3 and 7-6 on SMP box, BUGS in file.c and spinlock

From: Carlo Scarfoglio (md1288@mclink.it)
Date: Sun May 07 2000 - 15:04:40 EST

I thought I had tamed random lockups on my Abit BP6 mobo (2x400Mhz
Celeron overcloked to 433Mhz , 128Mb RAM, 2 ATA33, 1 ATA66 disks, Matrox
G200, SuSE 6.3) following a hint I found on this list. In fact, by
relaying mouse handling in X through gpm, the mouse+keyboard lockups
have not occurred anymore for more than six months.
But with these two pre-patches (I have been using prvious pre-patches
without problems) I have experienced three lockups. This time I have
messages in my logs. Finally, I have discovered some more hiccups in the
logs.
I hope this helps.

Carlo Scarfoglio

First the oopses: they occurred in X, while watching a small mpeg video
with mpeg_play or working with Midnight Commander, can't remember
exactly.
I post two of them, the first under pre7-3. the second under pre7-6.
