Denizens of this list, especially folks interested in embedded Linux,
might be interested in a recent milestone: the linuxbios project has
succeeding in creating GPL'd x86 firmware which can (as of this morning)
boot an x86 kernel into full multi-user. Boots off a standard IDE
drive, with video courtesy matroxfb[1].

Source code and more info at http://www.acl.lanl.gov/linuxbios/

Kudos to Ronald Minnich and others for all their hard work, and to Johan
Ryberg for providing the original GPL'd firmware sources on which the
current code is based.

[1] kudos also to Petr Vandrovec for creating an fbdev driver which
doesn't require VGA BIOS init...
