Sounds like the packets are not leaving the serial port when you
expect. I have seen similar symptoms (long delays between characters)
on serial consoles after Redhat's kudzu has done its probe for new
hardware. Disabling kudzu and rebooting fixed the problem, serial
consoles that were issuing characters at < 1200 bps jumped to the
correct 115200 bps.
