2.3.99-pre6 weirdness

I've installed this kernel on my machine and something's not right. I am
currently trying to move about 400MB of data from one drive to another.
My entire machine has ground to a halt. Every time the drive is accessed
everything else pauses. Even whilst i type this i have to wait for
the screen to be updated.

It also does it with other things, like starting X or playing an MP3.
Anything remotely processor intensive really.

Used to be fine in Pre-3.

My machine is a Celeron 466 in an Abit motherboard with 2 UDMA 33 drives.
