Why wouldn't I see the same problem with 2.3.51 or other recent kernel
versions on the same machine setup configurations, though?
Also, as long as I wrote something to an ext2 file system, say, /usr, at
the reboot time, I'd get "device busy" when unmounting /usr.
So, I don't think it's the /var/shm that caused the problem. It looks as
if some reference count gets messed up.

It's still a bad idea. I don't know who started this injurious
precedent, but noone seems to be willing to reverse it.
