They don't have to be "unique"... it only has to be uniform and different
between devices on the same machine. We don't need to be able to tell my
mouse from your mouse. We only need to be able to differentiate between
your three mice. Can the OS tell if you unplug and then plugin the same
mouse? (on the same port or different ports?) If it can tell, then it can
present a consistent name -- mouse0 is not a consistent name.

A vender serial number is good enough unless you have the misfortune of have
#42 from logitech, microsoft, genious...
