Old IDE driver problems in 2.3.99-pre5

Hi,
I tried to compile pre5 using the old driver only, but I got this error:

drivers/ide/ide.a(ide-geometry.o): In function `ide_xlate_1024':
ide-geometry.o(.text+0x19f): undefined reference to `get_info_ptr'
ide-geometry.o(.text+0x2bb): undefined reference to `current_capacity'

I have these old, really old 2.56G drives (old, but two of them make 5G), which
worked fine with 2.0.36 kernel. Since 2.2.x I'm getting these errors at boot:

hda: 5004483 sectors (2562 MB) w/256KiB Cache, CHS=4964/16/63
 hda:hda: set_geometry_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: set_geometry_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, CHS=0/0/0, sector=0
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, CHS=0/0/0, sector=0
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, CHS=0/0/0, sector=0
hda: set_geometry_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: set_geometry_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, CHS=0/0/0, sector=0
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, CHS=0/0/0, sector=0
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, CHS=0/0/0, sector=0
hda: set_geometry_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: set_geometry_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 0

I wonder if what I'm trying to do is right. It the "old driver" same as in 2.0
kernel?
Since this is my first posting to this list, i guess this info maybe not
enough, please let me know. I can give access to my machine if somebody is
interested.
Thanx,
Rado

P.S. I tried hdparm wihtout any soccess.
