The cardmgr daemon is not running, although it's not for lack of trying.
When I run cardmgr, it exits printing "cannot access
/lib/modules/2.3.99-pre3: no such file or directory". I compiled the kernel
with modules off and drivers built in to the kernel.
I will recompile the kernel with module support on and the PCMCIA drivers
built as modules instead of kernel components, and see if that helps.

This is a dual-boot (many-boot?) machine, and the PCMCIA components are still
around from previous kernel revs.
