[1.] One line summary of the problem:
ls gets stuck in D state on 2.3.99pre4-5

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
I downloaded a copy of RedHat 6.2 document CD (zoot-doc.iso) to my hard
drive and mounted it loopback with
mount -t iso9660 -o loop /mnt/rw1/zoot-doc.iso /mnt/loop
I then did a cd /mnt/loop and proceeded to list contents with
ls -lR|less

Partway through the listing the console froze and I was unable to
proceed. I then proceeded to try a couple of different invocations of
the ls command (insanity: doing the same thing and expecting something
different). I ended up with four ls processes stuck in D state and
unkillable as follows:

 6785 tty2 S 0:00 -bash
 6808 tty2 D 0:04 ls --color=auto -lR
 6809 tty2 S 2:35 less
 6810 tty3 S 0:00 -bash
 6833 tty3 D 0:00 ls --color=auto
 6834 tty4 S 0:00 -bash
 6852 tty5 S 0:00 -bash
 6893 tty5 D 0:02 /bin/ls -lR
 6894 tty6 S 0:00 -bash
 6911 tty6 D 0:03 /bin/ls -lR
 6913 tty4 R 0:00 ps ax

These were all unkillable (obviously). I'm going to have to reboot
after sending this message.
