Hardware vendors _can_ expect distribution vendors to know about
compiling. Users-with-clues can get their updates as source. Those
who just want an off-the-shelf version can get their updates from
the web site of whoever sold them their original boxed set.

Source as the common driver format does not have to be a nightmare
for the end user.
