Such things actually exists they called them modules :)

man modprobe man insmod .....

BTW I am unfortunally not awerage user so I use slackware distribution
( I am compiling kernel, editing configure files with joe,pico,mcedit
and if I really must with vi 1)
BUT
if I was an average user I would try Caldera OPEN Linux
you would be surprised HOW easy it is with drivers and instalation...

Note this is no commercial or what distribution is the finest ...
