this was the only linux box (and the one and only ppp server) on our subnet

route add -net 127.0.0.1 lo
and no
route add -net 127.0.0.0 lo
was in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 (Murphys Law ..)
Btw. following the NET-2-HOWTO there is no hint for using the second
line ...
