ext2 compression thing

In my quest to use Neat Things (tm) which I don't understand, I seem to
remember seeing an ext2 disk compression scheme which was being worked on.
The reference was I believe to a program which would work with a loop device
ext2 filesystem?
Does anyone remember anything of the sort?
