smbfs performance

Something is very wrong with smbfs in 1.3.97/1.3.91...

There's about one-two orders of magnitude difference in timing between
smbclient and smbfs...(on writing).

reading is very fast.

Anyone else seen this (I also see the problem where large directories are
incomplete.
